MYCENAE

Just 1000 feet on the right hand side after the entrance to city an amateur archeologist from Germany Schliemann found what he was looking for. From childhood he was fascinated with Ancient Greek myths and decided he would prove that the stories had a basis in fact. He decided to look for Mycenae and the base of Agamemnon’s power. The entire area was covered with soil, but after finding the gate to the city he brought workers and based what they could see they started to dig about 1000 feet inside the city wall.

They found a grave and uncovered the elements of ancient burials including clothing, jewelry and masks, some made of gold. They continued and found others. Eventually the amateur attracted professional archeologists from England, Germany and France.
