This is a very short story about a celebration held in early January in Italy. An old woman, poorly dressed and wearing a pointed black hat much as we picture a witch, comes to each house. She gives sweets to good children, and coal to naughty children. The coal is made of licorice, so it is a sweet, but never mind.

One of the students in our class brought some sweets to mark the first class of January. I gues we were all good because there was no licorice.
