Denderah Temple

Denderah is dedicated to the goddess Hathor. She is the goddess of beauty and joy and is associated with birth.

She has a broad face with ears of a cow and the capital now on the ground came from a colonnade inside the temple.

This is from the Greco-Roman period and on the west wall Cleopatra is shown with her son.

The entire interior is carved and painted. Now in beautiful colors the whole interior was blackened with soot from centuries of human habitation. Both carving and the painted is exceptional and a real surprise to me because this is a temple not in my texts.

The cleaned interior shows columns and ceilings carved and painted.

Workers above show the cleaning. All was covered with black soot as in the figure in front and the ceiling not yet cleaned.
