The ancient city of Thebes is now called Luxor and it is here that we visited Karnak, one of the most famous temple complexes. It is also the largest temple complex in Egypt although very badly damaged.
The model in the entry visitors center shows the sphinxes with heads of rams, one of the animal spirits of Ramses II a long lived ruler of the 19th Dynasty. Two pylons on either side of the entry to the open court and the entry to the hypostyle hall. Everything is in strict symmetry.
The ram-headed sphinxes show wear of centuries, but they stand to present an important edifice.
Carvings are deep and impressive. Most are on the ground on their sides. Impressive still.
