Founded in 332 BC by Alexander the Great the city was to be the capital of his empire which he planned to contain all the territories of the Middle East, North Africa and all of Europe that touched the Mediterranean Sea. One of the 7 wonders of the ancient world was Pharos Lighthouse which was said to be seen for 20 miles out to sea. A fortress stands on that site now. The stones from the gigantic lighthouse were used to build the fortress.
The sea is constantly in sight as we drove to our lunch at a fish restaurant along the oldest of the ports.
